The statue of Christ detached from the fercolo, sliding to the ground
It happened in Ispica (Ragusa) around 22.30 yesterday when the statue of the risen Christ – during the night procession at the end of which the simulacrum is brought back to the basilica of the Santissima Annunziata di Ispica – it detached from the base and slipped to the ground.
The incident happened the moment the statue came tilted sideways, a kind of ‘greeting’ which is found in processions in different locations. He scared and bewildered but fortunately no one was injured. “He could unfortunately happen – says the president of the archconfraternity of the Santissima Annunziata, Tommaso Gregni -, there is regret what happened. We have already talked to a restorer and it will be repaired immediately “.
The bearers of the ‘Don Bosco’ association needed to be consoled, they collected the statue and brought it back to the basilica. The procession was an event they had been waiting for for two years and which, every year, they prepare with devotion. For them the procession is a sacred event, not a simple statue, it is the real joy of carrying the risen Christ on their shoulders that they lead through the streets of the city to cry. “Viva Lu patri” (long live the Father).
In the morning, the statue of the risen Christ is carried in procession until the meeting with the statue of the Madonna who ‘greets’ the reborn son. Then in the evening, another short procession and the return to the Basilica. Right in front of the basilica, in one of the last sways, the sliding of the statue. A particularly difficult weekend in the Hyblaeans: the earthquake on Good Friday, then the rain with the statue covered so it wouldn’t take water and brought it back to the Annunziata, and last night’s fall. Until yesterday the common belief was that the statue was an integral part of the base while, what happened, it revealed a different technique. Between despair and tears, there are those who have seen instead a sign of protection from the Lord. The simulacrum fell at a time when there was no crowd, and it did not touch or touch anyone.
