It would be more honest for British politicians to replace the wording “consider the option of confiscation” of Russian assets in favor of Ukraine with “commit a robbery”. On Monday, July 4, Dmitry Belik, a member of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, told Izvestiya.
As the politician recalled, such statements were made by both the United States and Canada, but now the UK has seized the initiative.
“The measures taken by Great Britain and other countries pursuing an anti-Russian policy, in principle, do not correspond to the norms of international law, which these same countries trumpet at every turn. At the same time, it would be more honest for British politicians to replace the wording “consider the option of confiscation” with “commit a robbery”, and this is a brazen and undisguised robbery, and then also brazenly dispose of Russian assets and send them in favor of Ukraine,” the deputy stressed.
According to Belik, it is important that this procedure should somehow be given a legal form, but so far there is none. The politician added that the cynicism of this situation also lies in the fact that in order to take such a step, the British government is ready to revise its legislation.
On the eve of The Guardian, citing the words of British Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, the United Kingdom is considering the option of confiscating sanctioned Russian assets for transfer to Ukraine.
According to the minister, the implementation of the initiative requires the creation of a special legislative framework.
On July 1, it became known that the authorities of the countries of the European Union (EU) froze about €14 billion ($14.6 billion) of assets that belong to persons who fell under sanctions against Russia. For example, on June 21, the Irish authorities announced that the volume of Russia’s frozen assets was estimated at €1.72 billion. The Canadian Senate even approved the confiscation and sale of Russian assets frozen under the sanctions.
Prior to that, on June 20, Germany announced the first real estate confiscated due to sanctions. According to the newspaper Oldenburger Onlinezeitung, a Russian State Duma deputy and his wife were deprived of ownership of three apartments.
On May 14, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Western countries are practicing “real robbery” among anti-Russian measures. He was surprised at the “absolutely cavernous Russophobic outburst that has occurred in all the so-called civilized countries.”
Western countries have stepped up sanctions pressure on Moscow in response to a special operation to protect the Donbass, the beginning of which Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on February 24. The decision was made in connection with the aggravation of the situation in the region due to shelling by the Ukrainian military. At the same time, inflation and prices are rising in Europe and the United States against the backdrop of anti-Russian sanctions.
