The extension of the contract for the supply of gas to Moldova is a step forward on the part of Russia. Alexei Chepa, first deputy chairman of the State Duma’s international affairs committee, told Izvestia on Monday, November 1 about this.
He pointed out that the current situation with gas prices in Europe is difficult, adding that the decision of Russian President Vladimir Putin to fill European storage facilities is a step forward.
“A step towards meeting has been made in the direction of Moldova, where the situation is really difficult. I think that if <...> now everything works out, it will allow not so much to increase gas tariffs within the republic, which, of course, is politically important for Russia in our difficult relations with Moldova, ”the politician said.
Moscow meets halfway, stabilizes gas prices and gives guarantees, concluded Chepa.
Earlier on the same day, it became known about the start of gas supplies to Moldova under a new contract with the Russian “Gazprom”. Moldovan President Maia Sandu said that the republic is pleased with the extension of the contract. In her opinion, the gas crisis in the country ended with the signing of an agreement between Moldovagaz and Gazprom. According to the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov, the Russian Federation considers the extension of the contract to be mutually beneficial.
On October 30, the vice-premier of the republic, Andrei Spinu, announced that in November Moldova would purchase gas from the Russian company Gazprom at a price of $ 450 per 1,000 cubic meters. m.
A day earlier, Moldova agreed with Gazprom to extend the contract for the supply of Russian gas to the country for five years. The company called the agreement mutually beneficial.
During the Russian-Moldovan gas talks on October 22, the Russian side offered a 25% discount. The condition for receiving it was a promise to Moldova within three years to return the debt accumulated over previous years – about $ 700 million. According to the new contract, the republic will pay this debt. At the same time, the fuel that was supplied to Transnistria was not taken into account in these payments.
