Polling stations opened on Sunday morning at 8:00 local time in France for the start of voting in the first round of the legislative elections.
About 48.7 million French voters were invited to vote to choose 577 members of the National Assembly (the House of Representatives), and the government coalition led by the ruling Renaissance Party led by President Emmanuel Macron hopes to secure a government majority that allows the continuation of the current government and the implementation of its programs.
The latest opinion polls predicted a tie between the government majority candidates and the coalition of left parties led by the leader of the non-subjugated France party and the Greens with 28 percent of the seats in parliament each, with a slight weighting of President Macron’s bloc by one point in other polls.
If the opposition achieves a major victory in these elections, President Macron will have to appoint a prime minister who belongs to it and submit the resignation of the current government within what is known in the French political system as “political coexistence” between the president and the opposition.
The election campaigns over the past two weeks, according to specialists, were characterized by a state of lukewarmness amid speculations of a high rate of abstention from voting among voters during these elections, which are usually described in France as the third round of presidential elections. The French granted President Macron a second and final term during the presidential elections in the country last April. To implement his programs and those of his government, he needs to secure a majority in Parliament. The second round of legislative elections will take place next Sunday.
