Through an official statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) reported that it was carried out jointly with the Permanent Mission of the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Committee against Terrorism of the OAS (Cicte) a virtual workshop on prevention of violent extremism which could lead to terrorism.
The officials present at the opening of this meeting were the Undersecretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights of the SRE, Martha Delgado Peraltathe executive secretary of Cicte, Alison Treppel, and the head of the Guyana Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit, James Singh, in his capacity as chairman of the Committee.
Thin noted during his speech that violent extremism “It is not an isolated or static phenomenon, and its evolution represents a challenge for the countries of our hemisphere”. He was blunt in highlighting the need to combat access to handguns or assault weapons that, in the wrong hands, have fatal consequences.
Fionnuala Ni Aolain UN Special Rapporteur on the protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms in the fight against terrorism, shared with the forum good practices based on her experience for the prevention of acts of violent extremismas well as ways to address its causes.
The workshop was connected to more than 90 officials of the areas of security, diplomacy or foreign relations of the 19 member countries of the OAS.
The workshop has its origin in the initiative of the chancellor Marcelo Ebrard to encourage the strategic exchange between nations for the prevention of violent extremismfrom a “comprehensive perspective, based on the particular needs of the countries of the region and with full adherence to international law and international human rights law,” the statement read.
