A person infected with a coronavirus is most dangerous two to three days before the onset of symptoms of infection. Natalya Pshenichnaya, deputy director for clinical and analytical work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, spoke about this.
According to her, it is then that the concentration of the virus in the nose and nasopharynx can be very high. This is enough to infect other people, the specialist noted on November 21 in an interview with “Russian newspaper“.
It is the high level of release of the pathogen from the upper respiratory tract that is dangerous, she explained, even those with a mild form of coronavirus are contagious.
As noted by Pshenichnka, the sick can actively spread the virus in the first week after infection, after which the release of a viable virus from the body decreases, but continues with a mild course of the disease for up to ten days.
In other forms, the period increases to three weeks. The specialist added that if a sick person has a suppressed immune system, then a viable virus can be secreted for up to 70 days. According to some data, the period can reach 105 days.
A person who has recovered from COVID-19 can be safe for others only after a negative PCR test.
As it became known earlier on Saturday, re-infection with coronavirus is possible if a person has diseases that impair the functioning of the immune system. Earlier in November, American biologists found out the cause of the severe course of COVID-19 in people who smoke.
