The Community finalizes the restoration of two of the ‘iceboxes’ of Sierra Espuña; the only thing missing are the walkways and stairs that will facilitate the visit
The Master Plan for the Sierra Espuña Snow Wells is about to bear its first fruits: the restoration of two of the ‘iceboxes’ used for centuries to store ice, out of the twenty-eight located on the heights of the regional park, all located in the municipality of Totana except for two in Alhama and Mula. These are the structures identified with numbers 11 and 13, in the area known as Murcia wells, between Collado Mangueta and Valle de Leiva.
The rehabilitation is practically finished, only in the absence of applying an exterior waterproofing treatment and placing wooden stairs and walkways that will facilitate your visit, informs LA TRUTH the architect Pablo Carbonell, a partner of the Ecoproyecta studio, who has drafted the project and who he also directs the works.
The completion of the domes has been the culmination of some complex works because the original construction techniques with masonry and handmade brick have been respected to the maximum. The oculi made on the roofs will allow us to appreciate the interior of these large deposits where the snow was pressed for use during the spring in food preservation, ice cream production and sanitary uses.
The General Directorate of the Natural Environment (Ministry of Water, Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries, Environment and Emergencies) develops this heritage recovery project in a protected environment as a Site of Cultural Interest (BIC) with the category of ethnographic place.
The actions, valued at more than one million euros, foresee the restoration of another two wells and the recovery of more elements of the complex, unique in the Mediterranean, during the next few years.
