The odyssey of the survivors of a crashed plane in the Andes, who ate the flesh of the deceased passengers and who managed to spend the harsh winter in those mountains, was recognized at the Platino Awards with six awards: Best Ibero-American Fiction Film, Best Direction, Best Male Performance, Best Editing Direction, Best Cinematography Direction and Best Sound Direction. “It took us ten years because no one told us that a film with this budget was possible in Spanish,” Bayona declared when collecting one of the awards. “Today actors tour the world filling theaters and are welcomed like Hollywood stars after having become the most viewed film in history in Spanish on Netflix and the third most viewed of the year.”
Filmed in four countries (Argentina, Spain, Chile and Uruguay), Bayona claimed cinema as a “generous and fundamental tool of expression to build the identity of a country.” “Sometimes you have to do things differently to change the rules of the game,” he continued. “We have all the tools to change the rules of the game, to seduce the public to go see the movies and we have the talent to do it.”
Held in the Riviera Maya, Mexico, early Sunday morning, local time, the statuette for best actor was awarded to Enzo Vogrincic for his work in the film Bayona and in the actress category to Laia Costa, for 'Un amor'. The most notable supporting performers were José Coronado for 'Close your eyes' and Ane Gabarain for '20,000 species of bees'. The Uruguayan Vogrincic, who recognized himself as coming from “a small country with few opportunities and a neighborhood that in turn has less,” thanked Bayona: “When someone gives you an opportunity it makes a big difference.”
Other productions that received mentions at the Platinum Awards were 'Barrabrava', 'Love After Love', 'Iosi, the Repent Spy', 'The Thousand Days of Allende' and 'La Mesías', in which Lola Dueñas stood out in Best Female Interpretation in Miniseries.
