The competent Department prepares a dynamization contract of more than 440,000 euros after two years with the subsidies to the sector nipped in the bud
After a “catastrophic” year, Isabel did not know at the beginning of the last sales in January if she could resist much longer. And the reality is that he did not, because the store he ran on Platería street, Trucco, was already closed in the following discount period, the summer one, which started a little more than a week ago in both the large chains and in local commerce. «I have counted up to eight empty ground floors around Calle Jabonerías; the sector is at a critical moment, ”laments Marisa Cano, president of the Association of Silverware and Trapería Merchants, at the beginning of a sales campaign that could seem like a float to hold on to, but which is working unevenly. And “with discounts lower than other years”, according to customers asked at street level.
Therefore, both she and the president of the Murcia Commercial Area Federation (Femuac), Santiago Vera, ask the Murcia City Council for a work table similar to the one that the Consistory already maintains with the representatives of the hoteliers of the municipality to try to address the problems facing the sector. Because, in Cano’s words, “if they don’t help us, we can’t move forward.” “Commerce and hospitality are synergistic sectors, if one goes well, it has repercussions on the other, but we also need that direct communication thread,” says Vera.
The problems that can be intervened, as reported, range from small actions to more fundamental issues. Cano recalls, for example, that the traditional awnings that the City Council had been installing in Trapería y Platería for six years were still not installed at the beginning of July. “They are important in a city as hot as this and with the first heat wave already here.” Given this circumstance, from the Department of Pedanías and Neighborhoods, Human Resources and Urban Development they assure that they are working around the clock for its placement, which will take place in the coming days. “The previous government team did not leave money for this action and it has been necessary to intervene urgently to solve the problem”, defend municipal sources.
Merchants in the center demand the installation of the Trapería y Platería awnings, which the Consistory hopes to place shortly
On the other hand, merchants report a certain feeling of insecurity that needs to be mitigated with more police presence. “A week ago a boy came in, grabbed a pile of clothes and ran out,” complains Marian, a clerk at the Vidal Cano de Platería store. “Thefts like this are recurrent: we had one before the summer, but it is a fight that was already prior to the pandemic,” says Pilar García, from the Spagnolo store on the same street.
The third leg of the complaints focuses on energizing actions. “The municipal impulse actions have been limited since the last elections to three counted campaigns,” denounces Vera. The Department of Commerce has recognized that defects in the justification of subsidies led them to stop their concession and request refunds.
To avoid irregularities of this type, the same Department has long drawn up a commercial dynamization contract that has not just come out and to which the new mayor, the socialist Juan Vicente Larrosa, wants to give a boost. Thus, an action of almost 440,000 euros, VAT included, is being prepared, which covers advertising and communication actions, as well as an infrastructure for events and dynamization activities, including hostesses and security personnel. In addition, it wants to promote the associationism of the sector where it is not present.
