The town of Paiporta is one of the nerve centers of the tragedy that has struck the province of Valencia after the terrible DANA of this week. This town in the Huerta Sur region, with just over 27,000 inhabitants and which is the one that has recorded the most deaths due to the DANA that hit Valencia this Tuesday, has seen how Ground floors, basements and garages were completely flooded.
A shocking video broadcast by the media was recorded in one of those garages. Civil Guard. In it we see how specialist agents of the Special Group for Underwater Activities (GEAS) of the Armed Institute enter a garage that is completely flooded and covered in brush in search of possible survivors.
The GEAS is the unit of the Spanish Civil Guard in charge of the search and rescue of people, the location and recovery of objects in the aquatic environment. It was founded in 1981.
They are normally small units, usually no more than a dozen members. They usually consist of a non-commissioned officer, two corporals, ten guards and two drivers. Each group is subdivided, in turn, into two teams, each of which is under the command of one of the corporals, so that two services can be attended to simultaneously.
The different territorial groups that make up this Specialty, of the Civil Guard, are: Valdemoro (Madrid), Cuenca, Badajoz, Seville, Algeciras (Cádiz), Málaga, Almería, Ceuta, Melilla, Cartagena (Murcia), Alicante, Valencia, Barcelona, Estartit (Gerona) ), Huesca, Logroño (La Rioja), Valladolid, Gijón (Asturias), La Coruña, Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands), Ibiza (Balearic Islands), Santa Cruz de Tenerife and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Plus one in the UEI and another in the Security Unit of the Royal House.
