The dispute over the laws against the autonomy of judges and against LGBT. Slap to Poland and Hungary the European Court blocks the funds: “Respect the rule of law”
SENT TO BRUSSELS. ORra there are no more excuses to wait: the EU Commission can cut funds from the EU budget to Poland and Hungary for violations of the rule of law. The green light came yesterday with the verdict of the Court of Justice of the European Union which rejected the appeal of Budapest and Warsaw against the EU regulation. The judges established that the mechanism was “adopted on the basis of an adequate legal basis and respects the limits of the competences attributed to the Union and the principle of legal certainty”. But for the governments of the two countries it is “a political sentence” which represents “an attack on sovereignty”.

The story warmed the hearts of the EU Parliament, where Bulgarian MEP Angel Dzhambazki (Conservatives) insulted his Italian colleague Sandro Gozi and performed what appeared to be a Roman salute after concluding his speech with the cry of “long life to the Europe of nations “. “Fascist symbols are unacceptable in this Chamber”, the vice-president of Parliament, Pina Picierno, stigmatized the episode, who asked for disciplinary measures.
On the cut of funds in Poland and Hungary, the ball is now in the hands of Ursula von der Leyen, pressed by the European Parliament: “We expect the Commission to immediately apply the conditionality mechanism, which for us is not negotiable” asked President Roberta Metsola. But the EU executive is willing to buy time. “We will act with determination” assures von der Leyen, adding however that a series of steps will be needed. First of all, “the Commission will analyze the reasons for the ruling and its possible impact on the further measures we will adopt under the regulation”. After that “in the coming weeks we will adopt guidelines that will provide further clarity on how we apply the mechanism in practice”. And only at that point will the real measures be taken against the two countries.
On April 3, elections will be held in Hungary and within the Commission there are two different schools of thought: on the one hand there are those who would like to wait for the outcome of the polls so as not to give useful arguments to Orban to attack Brussels, from however, there are those who are pressing to accelerate, without giving discounts to the leader of illiberal democracy. He immediately took advantage of this to launch a counterattack against what he calls “a political and ideological sentence, made by abusing their power.”
Same tones also in Warsaw, which is already facing a cut in EU funds for failing to pay the 15 million euro fine relating to the non-closure of the Turow lignite mine. Just yesterday, the European chief prosecutor sent a letter to the Commission to denounce the fact that Warsaw is not collaborating with the EU prosecutor, signaling a further violation of the rule of law. The approval of the Recovery Plans of Poland and Hungary is also suspended, given that Brussels has not given the green light.
