The first morning session of the Ourense Spanish Championship left four more national champions who joined María Vicente and her great title, with a Spanish record, in pentathlon. Eusebio Cáceres (7.97 m) and Fátima Diame (6.47 m), both in the long pit, Jorge Ureña (5,955 points) in the heptathlon (although the man from Alicante seems to have a hard time being able to be in the Belgrade World Cup) and Saleta Fernández in the high jump with 1.85 m.
“I have a strange feeling. He came a little blind and with an anesthetized foot. Also, the time doesn’t help at all. We have been trying for a month to change it but they have not paid attention to us. An explosive test like longitude first thing in the morning is pointless. I was looking for the minimum for Belgrade but at 10:20 it is very difficult. I have no intention of jumping any more before the World Cup. If I don’t have time to go, I’ll dedicate myself to the outdoors after seeing if the foot thing is okay. Even so, I am very happy for a new title of champion of Spain”, Cáceres explained to the microphone of José María Rubí.
The grasshopper from Onil thus achieved his seventh title of champion of Spain and remains only one of the eight of Antonio Corgos, who leads the historical record in the competition. The Galician morning did not distribute more titles, waiting for the eight that will win in the afternoon session, but it did deliver tickets for different finals. There were no surprises or eliminated favourites, although athletes of the stature of Óscar Husillos, current European 400 meter champion, struggled to get among the six finalists. The Astudillo express will want to make up for it in Sunday’s final in which he will face Manuel Guijarro (46.02, fourth best Spanish record of all time), Bernat Erta, Bruno Hortelano, Iñaki Canal and Javier Sánchez.
Names like Adel Mechaal, Ignacio Fontes, Saúl Ordóñez and Kevin López (1,500), Maribel Pérez (60), Esther Guerrero, Marta Pérez, Águeda Muñoz and Mireya Arnedillo (1,500), Sergio López (60), or Laura Bueno, Sara Gallego and Aauri Bokesa (400) more than fulfilled moving on to their respective finals, which presage wonderful duels for the final day of the contest.
