An electronic service for presenting a driver’s license through a mobile application is launched in Russia on Saturday, October 1.
So, users can upload a document to the State Services Auto application and receive a QR code that can be presented to a traffic police officer. The state traffic inspector will be able to check the authenticity of the rights using a special tablet.
While the project is experimental, drivers are advised to carry a plastic document with them at all times. At the moment, amendments to the traffic rules are being developed, which should make electronic rights a full-fledged replacement for a physical document.
The head of the State traffic inspectorate of Russia, Mikhail Chernikov, announced earlier that testing of the service will begin on October 1. He also spoke about plans to set up the work of electronic rights so that they are available even in the absence of the Internet.
According to Petr Shkumatov, a member of the public council of the Central Internal Affairs Directorate of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in Moscow, this application will be in demand among Russians because of its convenience, since car owners often forget to take a plastic license with them.
However, some auto experts note possible difficulties when using electronic rights – for example, potential problems due to the lack of a stable Internet signal. In addition, experts point to the habit of Russians to use traditional paper documents.
