A resounding one mistake referee during the semi-final of the Rolex Monte Carlo Masters 2024 between Jannik Sinner and Stefanos Tsitsipas, won by the Greek champion 2 sets to 1, sparked the anger of the fans on social media.
It all happened during the fourth game of the third set, when both had already won a match each: 6 / 4 for the Greek in the first, 6 / 3 for the tennis player from San Candido in the second. Sinner led by 3 games to 1 and without that error he could have extended his lead to 4 to 1.
With the lead for the South Tyrolean (break point for Sinner), Tsitsipas hits too hard and sends the ball outside the lines of the court. In Monte Carlo there is no automatic hawk eye and despite the mark being well away from the line the chair umpire gives the Greek's point a good one.
Thus we return to 40-40 from which Tsitsipas then closes with an ace to avoid the break, taking it to 3 to 2. From there, the Greek manages not only to recover but also to overcome Sinner, then going on to win the third set by 6 to 4, winning the match and earning the final.
Many on social media defined the refereeing as “scandalous” which penalized the South Tyrolean champion, who was also held back by a small injury during the last games of the match.
