The Camino de la Cruz Foundation finances the casting costs of the piece by José Carrilero, who has donated his latest monumental work
The Caravacan sculptor José Carrilero Gil has donated his latest work to the town of Caravaca, coinciding with his appointment as Favorite Son of the city. The sculpture ‘The Rape of Europe’ has been cast in monumental size thanks to the sponsorship of the Camino de la Cruz Foundation, which has covered the expenses, and will be permanently exhibited in the Paco Pim square, embellishing and giving this identity central enclave of the urban area.
The mayor José Francisco García Fernández and the president of the Grupo Postres Reina, Alfonso López Rueda, representing the Camino de la Cruz Foundation, offered a press conference at the Carrilero Museum, together with the original of ‘El rapto de Europa’ that has served as the basis and model for the piece of monumental size and which is part of the permanent collection. “Once again, the public-private collaboration between the City Council and the Foundation makes another project a reality for Caravaca, without involving a high cost for the municipal coffers,” said the mayor.
The Consistory has already begun remodeling work on the fountain where the sculpture will be located on a travertine marble stone base. “From the City Council – added the mayor – we understood from the first moment the act of generosity of José Carrilero and that this sculptural piece would enrich the cultural and artistic heritage of the city, so we proposed the project.” It will be inaugurated on the 23rd.
Cultural icon of the city
The councilor stressed that “this action will improve the image of the main access to the urban area with the culminating work of Carrilero, which is destined to become a cultural icon of the city.”
For his part. López Rueda stressed that “the Camino de la Cruz Foundation continues to work to make Caravaca a first-rate tourist destination, favoring all initiatives aimed at that goal.” And he highlighted the need for the Government of Spain to declare the Camino de la Cruz and the Jubilee Year 2024 as an Event of Exceptional Public Interest, so that the legal tools and tax incentives necessary to continue developing this work are available.
In the plenary session of June 29, 2020, the process to name José Carrilero, one of the best national sculptors of the second half of the twentieth century, was culminated.
