The agreement between the City Council and the Murcian Seed Network will allow this organization to provide the schools with varieties
The school gardens of the municipality of Murcia, which this year add up to 61, will be able to plant seeds of the local varieties of different vegetables, following a totally ecological method: tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, pumpkins, zucchini, lettuce, spinach, peas, broad beans and chickpeas , among other.
The Murcia City Council is going to sign an agreement with the Murcian Seed Network, which will last one year and can be automatically extended, so that this organization distributes seeds of local varieties to all school gardens in the municipality that participate in the Environmental Education Program. This program has already been fourteen years old and, since then, it has not stopped growing. In fact, this last year fifteen more centers have signed up.
The participating gardens will cultivate these local varieties “with ecological methods” and seeds of at least one of the varieties will be extracted to be able to plant them the following year, explained municipal sources. The objective of this program is “to guarantee the sustainability of the projects”.
Schoolchildren must also take photographs, videos or other types of documents to share the results in the Network of Ecological School Gardens in the municipality of Murcia.
The Murcian Seed Network is a non-profit association, established in 2015, whose purpose is to protect agricultural biodiversity, support sustainable agriculture and food sovereignty through the recovery of local varieties and traditional knowledge. In the network, local varieties are grown, preserved and exchanged, mainly from the Iberian southeast. Collaborate with other international groups.
