“I’m a human being. Sometimes I also aspire to joy, light and pleasure in the midst of these dark clouds. Fighting back tears, Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin apologized once again on Wednesday for videos of her dancing animatedly with a group of friends.

Since the images were leaked, the controversy has not ceased. On the one hand, those who support her by pointing out that she has the right to attend a private party at times when she was not working; and those who say that her behavior has not been appropriate for someone who holds the most important political position in a country.

Even Marin – at 36 she is the world’s youngest prime minister – underwent a drug testwhich was negative, to clear up any doubt that he had consumed some kind of drug during the party.
But the scandal did not stop there. A few days ago photos of another meeting were released, this time at the official summer residence in Kesäranta, where two women kissing with bare chests and a sign with the word “Finland” appear.
Although there has been no call for her resignation from the opposition, her political rivals, such as the far-right Finns Party, have wanted to take advantage of the situation by questioning her seriousness as a leader.
In solidarity with Marin, Finnish women shared videos of her dancing or drinking at parties on social networks, trying to normalize the attitude of a young prime minister, who has one of the most difficult jobs in the country, but also has the right to clear her head at times of their responsibilities.

In the midst of this current of support, there are also those who have pointed out that the scandal would not have been such if the prime minister had been a man.
In this regard, the Finnish journalist Kukka-Maria Ahokas commented to Spain’s Cadena SER that there is a generational gap in the reactions to the prime minister’s videos: “In previous decades, our prime ministers got very drunk, they were even alcoholics, they drank vodka with the leaders of the Soviet Union. Now times have changed and it is a double-edged sword for her. She is attacked for being a woman, she has many young women in her government, she is politically strong and this irritates many conservative sectors of society”.
For this reason, here we remember the cases of other prime ministers in Europe, whose scandals went much further than Sanna Marin’s dances.
1. Boris Johnson’s party gate
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was fined last April by police for breaking the law by participating in a 2020 birthday party at Downing Street, the official residence, when pandemic restrictions prevented the rest of the population participate in social gatherings.
The press was revealing that it was not a single party, but that there were several celebrations held at the Government headquarterswhich caused the outrage of the public, but that did not make Johnson blink.
The controversial political talkative only announced his departure from the government when more scandals were added to his administration, such as sexual complaints against several of his relatives.
The Conservative Party is in the process of appointing a new leader of the formation, who in the coming weeks should replace Johnson in office.
2. Berlusconi’s ‘bunga bunga’ parties
At 85 years old, Silvio Berlusconi has not abandoned politics. In fact, the millionaire ex-prime minister of Italy is in the middle of a campaign to become a senator in the upcoming elections in September.
It does not matter that his trials have not yet concluded and that he is still being investigated for prostitution of minors, parties with “sex slaves” dressed as odalisques and bribery so that witnesses do not continue to tell what they saw in the evenings that turned into orgies. All this while he held the position of prime minister.
The trial of the infamous ‘bunga bunga’ parties has given rise to three lawsuits. In the first he was accused, although finally acquitted, of extortion and prostitution of minors; the second is related to a series of personalities who would have hired the girls; and the last for false testimony and bribery of witnesses.
The media boss was expelled from the Senate in 2013, after being convicted of tax fraud, which prevented him from holding public office and standing for election for several years.
3. Yeltsin Cups
Boris Yeltsin was the first president (1991-1997) of the Russian Federation, after the fall of the Soviet Union.
Nevertheless, his historical figure is most remembered for his alcoholism, which put him in trouble several times in public and even at important summits, and which finally ended up complicating his health. Yeltsin passed away in 2007.
According to the Russia Beyond page, his security chief, Alexander Korzhakov, said in his memoirs that the Russian president abused alcohol daily and sent his advisers to buy him vodka, despite the fact that the drink had been banned in the presidential kitchen. .
Former US President Bill Clinton told several anecdotes with Yeltsin to journalist Taylor Branch, who captured them in a book.
There he tells that the Russian president was in Washington on a state visit, but that one night he drank so much that he slipped out of the Blair residence in his underwear – where heads of state visiting the White House stay – and was found by the secret service in the middle of Pennsylvania avenue hailing a taxi to buy a pizza.
But, apparently, for Yeltsin it was not enough. The next day, also with several drinks too many, he escaped to the basement of the residence and was about to be shot to death because a security guard mistook him for a drunken intruder.
4. Rajoy, to the sound of Raphael
The former President of the Spanish Government, Mariano Rajoy, is not remembered precisely for his pleasant character. His serious face was the mark of the Popular Party during the years in which he was in charge of the Executive (2011-2018) and also as leader of the opposition.
But it was in 2018 when the perception of him changed a little, since he appeared in a video dancing at a wedding in Murcia to the rhythm of “Mi gran noche” by Raphael. He danced to that same song several times on other occasions, in which he was also caught relaxing from his governmental responsibilities.
