Barcelona complicated their presence in the round of 16 of the Champions League after losing 1-0 against Inter in a match marked by the controversy in the annulment of Pedri’s goal and in the decision of the referee and the VAR not to award a penalty for Dumfries’ hand in added time.
The Giuseppe Meazza hosted the duel of the day on this third day of the Champions League group stage in which Inter went from less to more and took advantage of their moment of dominance to beat Barcelona again twelve years later, by time that embittered one more night for a Lewandoski who has not yet started in Europe with the Blaugrana shirt.
The VAR had already been the protagonist from early on. The ‘Nerazzurri’ team grew hand in hand with their fans, who did not stop pressing and saw how Eric García committed a clear penalty for handball in the 23rd minute. The referee, through VAR, did not award the maximum penalty for offside of Lautaro.
The controversies with the VAR in the second half
In the 67th minute a goal came from Barcelona. Dembélé managed to beat Dimarco for the first time and reached the baseline, from where he took a cross that Onana touched in a bad start and that ended at the feet of a Pedri who only had to push her. But the VAR called the referee again, who reviewed the play and saw an Ansu Fati handball before the ball reached Pedri’s feet.
The decision to disallow the goal generated protests from the visitors, especially Xavi who received the yellow card.
In the fourth minute of substitution, Dumfries touched the ball with his hand inside the area in the fourth minute of the eight stoppage time, but the VAR did not consider the infraction. The protests emerged again in another new party controversy.
Xavi Hernández, coach of Barcelona, declared after the defeat against
Inter Milan in the Champions League marked by the final controversy in which the referee and the VAR did not point out a penalty for the hand of the Dutchman Denzel Dumfries in discount time, that “the referee should give explanations.”
“I’m outraged, the referee should give explanations as to why he hasn’t whistled. He hasn’t given them to me. That’s why I think it’s unfair,” he said as soon as the match ended to the Movistar microphones.
“I am outraged. It is a great injustice. The referee should give explanations”

“I think we have woken up late. We have been very good the last 20 minutes, half an hour, we have bottled them up, but we have lacked that dynamism during the first part and part of the second. We have had our chances and we have not materialized them”, he added.
