The head of the All-Russian Popular Front project “For the rights of borrowers” Evgenia Lazareva said that the scammers decided to blackmail the clients of Russian banks, who “troll” them during a telephone conversation. In conversation with RIA News she noted that such behavior can lead to serious consequences and loss of money.
She noted that 90 percent of Russians have at least once encountered malefactors who are trying to steal money from victims by phone. The expert added that such actions “frankly got people”, so many begin to scoff during the conversation.
“At the same time, there are cases of recording the voice of a victim, subsequent editing and then blackmailing citizens with the help of such audio,” Lazareva noted. She explained that the fraudster begins to provoke a person so that the record is as detailed as possible.
After that, the victim is sent an edited recording of the conversation, which can compromise or bring other troubles. The cybercriminals promise to send it to relatives, acquaintances, employers, partners, and so on, after which they extort money.
The expert concluded that there are still few such cases, they are not made public mainly because of the fears of those who fell for the tricks of the scammers. However, several cases were recorded when victims sent large enough sums to blackmailers.
Earlier, information security specialist Alexander Vlasov named ways to protect against a new type of online fraud – fake prize draws through instant messengers. “There is supposedly a drawing, and you need to follow the link to find out the amount of your winnings. By clicking on the link, a person gets to a fraudulent site, which may look like the site of some well-known organization (manufacturer, messenger, bank, lottery), “Vlasov explained.
