The first team of the Russian national ski team was deprived of the bronze medals won by athletes in the relay at the World Cup in Lahti, Finland due to the unsportsmanlike behavior of Alexander Bolshunov. This is reported on the website International Ski Federation (FIS) Sunday, January 24th.
In Sunday’s race the Norwegian team won, the Finnish team took the second place. The first team of the Russian national team took third place. However, after the finish, an incident occurred between Bolshunov and Finnish skier Yoni Mäki, after which the jury disqualified the team.
Thus, the second team of the Russian national team, finishing fourth, rose to the third line.
At the finish line of the men’s relay, Bolshunov competed with Myaki for second place. However, the Finn pushed the Russian to the edge of the track. After that, the Russian waved a stick in his direction, and after the finish he crashed into the opposing team, the newspaper writes “Sport-Express”…
Yegor Sorin, coach of the Russian national ski team statedthat it is necessary to disqualify not the Russians, but the Finns.
“Sasha [Большунов] clearly occupied the right corridor. Finn began to rebuild, there was a ski contact twice, this brought Sasha to emotions. The final episode, of course, will also be considered. But the racing incident itself should be considered in terms of the disqualification of Finland, ”said the coach.
Sorin promised that the team file a protest on the Finn’s actions during the relay.
The day before, Bolshunov lost his leadership in skiathlon at the World Cup in Lahti due to a fall. The athlete was in the group of leaders, but after the fall he took only 5th place, losing 20.9 seconds to the Norwegian Emil Iversen. A Norwegian skier fell on him, assuring that this did not happen on purpose,
The next stage of the World Cup will start on January 29 in Falun, Sweden. The competition will run until January 31st.
