A number of countries are working on the issue of placing weapons in outer space for conducting battles. This was stated by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Russia to the UN Office in Geneva Andrei Belousov, reports RIA News…
Pointing to the threat of fighting in space and its transformation into an arena of armed confrontation, the representative of the position of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) noted that building up the potential for forceful impact on space objects and life support infrastructure on Earth could lead humanity to disaster.
Belousov drew attention to the importance of preventing an arms race in outer space and preserving outer space for peaceful purposes. “The priority of its solution is enshrined in the final document of the first special session of the UN General Assembly on disarmament in 1978,” the deputy chairman said.
Earlier, the head of the Department for Nonproliferation and Arms Control of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Vladimir Ermakov, warned about the threat of turning outer space into an arena of conflicts in his report to the meeting of the First Committee of the UN General Assembly on Arms Control. According to him, a number of UN member states have embarked on a course of placing weapons in space “in order to achieve their own military superiority.”
