Persistent fever, reduced oxygen saturation and shortness of breath should alert those infected with the omicron strain of coronavirus. The presence of these signs requires immediate medical attention. Dangerous symptoms in a conversation with Lenta.ru were named by an infectious disease doctor, candidate of medical sciences, chief physician of the Invitro-Siberia clinical diagnostic laboratory Andrey Pozdnyakov.
“As it has become clear over these two years, two things that require an unconditional call to a doctor are a persistent fever for more than three days and a decrease in oxygen saturation. And if there is shortness of breath, this is a direct reason to seek a doctor, ”the physician listed the alarming symptoms.
Pozdnyakov noted that the oxygen level can be accurately measured only with a pulse oximeter, but visually the condition can be assessed according to subjective criteria: shortness of breath at rest and lack of air.

The doctor also explained that the symptoms of omicron differ from the clinical picture of other variants of coronavirus because it originated in a vaccinated human environment and either those who have been vaccinated or those who have already been ill become infected with it. “Omicron flows more easily in mass precisely because it has already “sat” on a more or less protected population. In the unvaccinated, it proceeds like the Wuhan strain, with fever and shortness of breath. It’s just that there are fewer such people, ”he concluded.
Earlier, Denis Protsenko, chief physician of hospital No. 40 in Kommunarka, said that fever and intoxication can be called the hallmark symptoms of the omicron strain. He added that his symptoms are in many ways similar to SARS, but there are no specific manifestations. Protsenko noted that the incubation period for the virus was reduced to seven days.
