The Ukrainian government had confirmed earlier on Sunday that Russian forces had stormed Kharkiv, the country’s second largest city in terms of population, after fierce battles.
A videotape shows what appears to be Ukrainian soldiers firing, before one of them advances and fires 3 RPGs towards a nearby target, where Russian forces appear to be holed up.
There were military vehicles parked in the middle of the road, while the streets were empty of cars and pedestrians.
The shooting did not stop throughout the video, and there were soldiers sheltering by the wall.
And the French news agency reported that Kharkiv, in the north-east of the country, a street fighting on Sunday between Kiev forces and Russian forces, the city authorities had announced their entry.
Fighting has continued since the morning, with the appearance of abandoned or burning light armored vehicles in the streets, while sporadic gunshots and explosions resounded throughout the city, whose streets were deserted while residents remained in their homes.
After the Ukrainian government acknowledged the Russian army’s entry into the city, a local official said the fighting had turned into a street war.
And video clips in the early morning monitored the entry of light Russian military vehicles into the city.
The city was under a fierce Russian attack in recent days, and Kiev admitted that the situation there, on Saturday, was among the most difficult in the country.
On Saturday, the official Ukrainian news agency reported that there was heavy fighting near the city of Kharkiv, where Russian forces blew up a natural gas pipeline.
“The enemy wants to destroy everything,” said Vasilkiev Mayor Natalia Balasinovich.
Kharkiv is Ukraine’s second most populous city, about 50 km from the border with Russia.
The importance of the city stems from being an industrial center, where machines are manufactured, and is also a center for the Ukrainian military industries.
