His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, received, Monday morning, a team of international archaeological experts, at the residence of Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi.
During the meeting, which was attended by Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi, Ambassador of the International Nomination File for the Al Faya World Heritage Site, the most prominent features of the Mleiha region in terms of antiquities, history and different topography were discussed, in addition to the efforts of the Emirate of Sharjah to preserve archaeological areas, ongoing excavation operations, and non-interference. And development of heritage areas, to be in compliance with the conditions and laws of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
His Highness stressed that the Al Faya area is considered one of the most important sites of the Stone Age in the Arabian Peninsula and the world, and it bears great indications about the history of the first human migration. It is also full of many archaeological discoveries, which makes it suitable for inclusion on the UNESCO World Heritage List. His Highness pointed out that The aim of including the Al Faya area on the World Heritage List is to preserve the cultural heritage for future generations, share it with the world and promote it.
The Faya Mountains site is considered an exceptional example of the desert environment during the Stone Age, and dates back to early human settlement in the region, to the beginnings of the Middle Stone Age and until the Stone Age, during changing climatic conditions in the Arabian Peninsula, as archaeological and environmental studies of the historical layers at the site documented the continuity of human settlement. 210 thousand years ago.
The Emirate of Sharjah had previously included four important archaeological sites on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, after a series of studies it conducted with experts and academic specialists.
These sites included the site of Mleiha – the pre-Islamic period – in the southeast of the Arabian Peninsula, the stone inscriptions at Khatm Al-Malha and Khor Fakkan, Wadi Al-Hilu, which bears witness to copper mining in the Bronze Age in the Arabian Peninsula, and the prehistoric cultural landscape of Al-Faya.
