Mark Rober is a youtuber American known for his scientific videos and inventions, who has now presented his latest creation. This is a robot called Rocky who is unbeatable in the popular game of rock, paper and scissors.
According to Rober, Rocky uses advanced technology to anticipate and counter his opponent’s every move. In a video recently posted on his YouTube channel, Rober demonstrated Rocky’s capabilities and offers a prize of 10,000 dollars (9,400 euros) to whoever can beat the robot.
As stated Interesting EngineeringRocky’s secret lies in his ability to follow hand movements and finger positions. This allows you instantly recognize the player’s choice and select the winning counterattack before the human can finish his hand gesture.
“Rocky not only tracks the position of my hands, so it matches my up and down movements, but checks the position of my fingers 100 times per second using an IR handheld motion detector and a mini computer to determine what I’m throwing,” notes Rober.
However, Rober has also shared a strategy that players can use to potentially improve their odds and beat Rocky. “You should know that there is a trick that you can use while playing against other humans to win 75% of the time“, says.
Rober proposes playing a pattern of playing rock, paper, scissors in sequence, which could increase the chances of winning. “A few years ago, researchers studied 54,000 games of rock, paper and scissors and they discovered a pattern,” Rober explained.
“If your opponent wins, they are slightly more likely to stick with their previous choice, and if they lose, slightly more likely to change your choice to the next along the lines of rock, paper, scissors,” he says.
“Unfortunately, regardless of your strategy, your chances against Rocky are much, much smaller. Nothing less than that!” concludes Rober, who is a NASA engineer and founder of CrunchLabs, a company that creates monthly scientific toys.
