Some notes to get started in the Tolkien universe before seeing the flagship Amazon series
With 25 million viewers worldwide, ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power’ has become Amazon’s top series, breaking all records. The return to Middle-earth nine years later has aroused curiosity in a production that addresses a time that goes nearly 6,000 years behind the plot of Frodo and company. In fact, little was known of the Second Age up to this point, at least on screen. And although there are already five chapters released (of eight in total) there are some keys that do not change and that serve to rejoin a series that has already made history.

The history of the rights of the universe created by JJR Tolkien and that is contained in the so-called ‘Legendarium’, as the author called his set of works, is convoluted and that irremediably affects the plot of ‘The Rings of Power’. Amazon’s history with The Lord of the Rings begins in 2017. Even before the production phase, Jeff Bezzos’s company had disbursed close to 250 million dollars (in the end the series came out for 465 million, being the most expensive of the history).
The point is that the agreement reached by the platform with Tolkien State, the original owner of the rights, includes setting the plot in the Second Age, but they cannot follow the letter of ‘The Silmarillion’ and ‘Unfinished Tales’, both published after the author’s death. Nor ‘The Lord of the Rings’ (it should be remembered that the worldwide rights to the entire saga were sold by Tolkien himself in 1969, four years before his death, for just 10,000 pounds).
Tolkien Saga expert Tom Shippeywho worked for the series but left in 2020, explained in 2019 that “Amazon has relative freedom to add something because very few details are known” about the Second Age, but that “it should not contradict anything that was said Tolkien.”

In this way, ‘The Rings of Power’ takes place during the Second Age, about 6,000 years before Frodo came into action and, in case there is any doubt as to what order to watch the saga of ‘The Lord of the Rings’, Amazon’s bet is also located chronologically before the three installments of ‘The Hobbit’. Of course, those who have already navigated the universe of Tolkien’s pen find new protagonists and stories in the series.

The background pattern is not altered. Thus, without making more spoilers than reviewing the already known history, the series is inspired by the moment in which Sauron manages to deceive the elves to forge the rings of power and then create his own, the only ring that controls all the others. and that will carry thousands of years from the sun after Frodo Baggins to Mount Doom.
