The new portraits of the Kings, Felipe VI and Letizia, They arrived this Tuesday at the Bank of Spain, which commissioned the project for the tenth anniversary of his Reign and the twentieth anniversary of the monarchs’ wedding.
Behind the work is nothing more and nothing less than the American Annie Leibovitzawarded in 2013 with the Prince of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities and considered the best paid photographer in the world.
Leibovitz carried out the session on February 7 and the result has seen the light today, within the framework of the exhibition ‘The tyranny of Cronos’ of the Bank of Spain. In this way, the work is added to the entity’s official portrait gallery, which until now did not have any photographs.
Both portraits form a diptych that complements each other and seeks to unite the portrait tradition of painters such as Goya or Velázquez with the renewal that photography represents.
The meaning of the ring worn by Queen Letizia in the portrait of Annie Leibovitz
In his portrait, the King appears dressed in the Army’s dress uniform, while the Queen wears a black tulle dress silk with a fuchsia designer cape Cristobal Balenciaga. The setting for the photographs is the historic Gasparini Hall of the Royal Palace of Madrid.
Queen Letizia’s dress has captured all eyes. However, there is one detail of her look that has caught special attention: her ring. The choice of this jewel is not coincidental, and it is one of the favorites of the monarch’s jeweler, which she always wears on the index finger of her left hand.
The gold ring that the Queen wears in the portrait of the Bank of Spain is from the firm Coreterno. The first time Letizia wore the jewel was at the beginning of 2023, becoming one of her favorites. And the monarch has worn it on very significant occasions such as the swearing-in of the Constitution by her daughter, Princess Leonor.
The jewel also keeps a meaning very special. On the outside has registered “Amor che tutto move” (“Love moves everything”). As stated on the Coreterno website, the phrase is a “powerful” quote inspired by the last line of Dante Alighieri’s masterpiece ‘The Divine Comedy’.
In addition, the ring has another important message inside: “As long as I’m existing, you will be loved” («As long as I exist, you will be loved»)a phrase inspired by an old English ballad originating from the Middle Ages.
“This evocative message carries the essence of eternal love and resonates through the ages, capturing the essence of true love and dedication,” says the brand, which sells the jewel for 175 euros.
According to Coreterno, it is a “romantic” handmade ring. “It celebrates love as an unstoppable force, shaping the very structure of existence and revealing its extraordinary ability to move mountains and manifest the extraordinary,” they indicate.
