The VAT increase on October 1 Foods such as eggs, milk, vegetables and pasta, which have enjoyed a tax reduction since January 2023, have caused the basic food shopping basket to become more expensive by almost 4% in October, thus leaving without effect the fall in the food CPI to 1.8% in Septemberaccording to an analysis carried out by the Association of Financial Users (ASUFIN).
“The 3.27% decrease in prices that the basic food shopping basket experienced last month, before the Government passed on the VAT again, after nearly two years of tax relief, has been replaced by a slightly higher rebound, 3.83%this month, which anticipates a complicated end to the year in the field of food, due to the intensive purchasing dates that are approaching,” the organization says in a statement.
The ASUFIN report, which analyzes the main distribution chains, concludes that these supermarkets have raised prices for the rising prices, especially, of bananas and potatoeswhich climbed 32% and 17%, respectively, and highlights that “even more relevant is that other products that have barely moved for months have begun to rise”, such as flour, whole milk, eggs , rice and sunflower oil.
