The Committee on Petitions of the European Parliament hosts this morning the debate on the report resulting from the mission from Brussels that visited the Mar Menor last February at the request of a platform of neighborhood organizations and environmental groups.
The draft of this opinion, which was made public in July, includes a wide range of proposals to remedy the contamination of the natural space, ranging from widely agreed measures, such as the control of agricultural nitrates and the reforestation and rehabilitation of channels, to other more controversial ones, such as the possible opening of the golas to favor a greater exchange of water with the Mediterranean Sea.
However, the text that is being debated today incorporates novelties such as the identification of agricultural nitrates as the main cause of the degradation of the lagoon and the control of the European funds used in its restoration. The report of the European parliamentarians who visited the Mar Menor will not be debated on more occasions, but the different political groups can present allegations until the 25th of this month.
And although the opinion of said Commission is not binding, the Murcian socialist MEP Marcos Ros Sempere warns that its final wording “will respond to the will of European citizens.” For his part, Marcos Ros will be in charge of defending today “the end of nitrates and a change in the agricultural model in the Mar Menor environment.”
