Millonarios has not been able to pay the great debt of its history, the Copa Libertadores. This Wednesday, the team led by Alberto Gamero tied 1-1 with Bolívar de La Paz in El Campín and, practically, sentenced their elimination from the continental tournament.
Although the accounts still give him a place in the round of 16, the truth is that his poor performance leaves him in suspense even to fight for third place, which gives way to a playoff to continue in the Copa Sudamericana.
“I know that the fan is hurt. We have to give back the joy to the fan. It is difficult to qualify for the group stage, our dream was to play in it, but many things have happened to us, we always have in mind to give joy to the fans,” said the coach. blue, Alberto Gamero.
EL TIEMPO analyzes the causes of a new international failure for Millonarios, whose best performance in Libertadores was having reached the semifinals three times, in 1960, 1973 and 1974. They have not passed the group stage since 1997.
The payroll was short
From the champion team, Óscar Cortés was transferred to Lens in France and Luis Carlos Ruiz retired. The only player who came to the club was Daniel Ruiz, who returned from Santos in Brazil.
This year, he lost Fernando Uribe, who also left professional soccer. Elvis Perlaza went to Santa Fe and Édgar Guerra, after scoring three goals on the first match against Medellín, went to León, Mexico.
Only Diego Novoa, a goalkeeper who had just been a substitute in America, arrived; Delvin Alfonzo, Chicó full-back; Santiago Giordana, who had just been a scorer in Peru; Danovis Banguero, who has been more in the medical department than on the field, and Émerson Rodríguez returned. Very little to think about fighting in the Libertadores.
“I ask one thing from the fans: believe in what we have. Why don’t you believe in what we have? Let’s give confidence to young players?” said Gamero in January of this year, before the start of the championship.
Low individual levels
All of this has been reflected in the Millonarios campaign during the semester. In the League they had a seven-game blackout that almost cost them qualification. Even though he won six games in a row to reach home runs, in several of those wins he ended up calling time.
Injuries, the eternal problem
Journalist Juan Camilo Vargas made a compilation of all the injuries that Millonarios has suffered in recent months. There are 22 of them, of which 11 are muscular. And several players have repeated: Mackalister Silva has had three of the latter type, plus an ankle problem; Leonardo Castro had two muscle problems and is now out with a shoulder injury.
Lack of effectiveness
According to that same portal, Millonarios shoots, on average, 18.3 times per game (6.3 times on goal). But he has only scored five goals: three from Leonardo Castro, who has fulfilled his task; one from Daniel Ruiz and one from Andrés Llinás.
Millos finds it difficult to get the goal in zero
The issue is due to a combination of the previous reasons: lack of filter in the middle, low individual level and the chain of injuries that has forced the roster to constantly move.
Millonarios has the League as a salvation card for the semester. Conmebol tournaments continue to be its Achilles heel.
