Alexander Opeikin, coordinator of the Sports Solidarity Fund of Belarus, explained why athlete Kristina Timanovskaya worried about her life before the Belarusian authorities tried to deport her from the Olympic Games in Tokyo. He told about this to the “Lenta.ru” correspondent.
Opeikin said that after a video criticizing officials, Timanovskaya was under strong pressure from the Ministry of Sports, as well as sports officials from the NOC. He stressed that the athlete began to be shown on the Belarusian state channels, criticizing and calling her a traitor.
“She planned to go to all the starts, stayed in Tokyo, although she had anxiety. Today representatives of the NOC came to her and said that she had 10-15 minutes to get ready, because she had to go to Minsk. This is a forced deportation. She understood that if she was shown on state channels, then this is already a very alarming sign, she was worried about her life and safety and took the right step by contacting the police, ”said the coordinator.
Earlier on August 1, the NOC removed the athlete from the competition application. Thus, Timanovskaya was excluded from the national team on the eve of the race. After that, the Sports Solidarity Fund accused the Belarusian national team of forcibly deporting the athlete from Tokyo, and the International Olympic Committee demanded an explanation from Minsk.
Later Timanovskaya decided to ask for asylum. It is clarified that the athlete plans to submit a petition to the Austrian authorities.
