FC Barcelona has added four new faces to its squad during this winter market and was about to sign a fifth reinforcement, Nicolás Tagliafico. The Argentinian Ajax player is one of the names that the Barça team has on their list of reinforcements for the left back and the defender’s wish is also to wear a Barça shirt.
The Argentine soccer player asked the club to let him out and was about to land at the Camp Nou in this same winter market, but despite all their efforts, the clubs did not reach an agreement and the operation did not materialize.
Marc Overmars, the sports director of Ajax, explained on the club’s official television why both teams failed to reach an agreement for the transfer of the player who finally did not leave in January.
“Tagliafico’s deal with Barca was very difficult. Yes. I wish Nico all the best, but we also have to make sure we don’t shoot ourselves in the foot. If Barcelona want to sign the player on loan, then we need to have a substitute at that position,” Overmars said.
And indeed, Barcelona offered them the youth squad Alex Balde in exchange, but the Dutch team was not satisfied with the exchange and ended the negotiations: “We want to think about the players, we are also known for that. We did that, but we didn’t we came to a good solution.
“Tagliafico is a fantastic player. It just didn’t work out,” he added.
Therefore, Tagliafico will continue to play for Ajax, the club with which he has a contract until 2023, until the end of the season. We will see if for the next market FC Barcelona resumes the conversations or looks for a new reinforcement for the left-handed side.
