Dozens of meters of lights with colored bulbs, original cars from the early 20th century, a cafeteria from 1927, fire trucks with a circus touch, seats with red velvet, iron installations for the acrobats and large spotlights on a circular stage inside a tent almost ten meters high are the elements of the Raluy Legacy circus.
With more than 100 years of experience, he landed this week in Murcia to premiere his show 'In art we trust' this Friday, April 19 until May 19. They are already in their sixth generation of circus that lives in the caravans, where they travel, along with a dozen wagons from the last century, to offer spectators their best shows. A traveling life full of expectations, uncertainty and novelty to meet the public that houses each of the cities they visit.
They are already in the sixth generation of the circus that lives in the caravans, where they travel, along with a dozen wagons from the last century.
Currently the family business is run by Louisa and Kerry Raluy, granddaughters of Luis Raluy, the founder of the circus-museum that now travels around the world: “We are the only circus in Spain directed by two women,” says the first of the sisters. . Although the young Niedziela and Emily Raluy, Louisa's daughters, also play an important role: “Being part of the family, we do a little of everything.” Every day is different and, despite preparing and performing their own performances, they also collaborate and organize the entire set every time they change destinations.
Your special touch
Emily Raluy says: «Our hallmark is caravans that are more than 100 years old. They make the circus a traveling museum. The public can visit them. They enter and there is the magician who welcomes them, the comedian who asks them questions, there are food stands and then there is the intimate and cute tent. This centuries-old set that they slowly drag along the roads, even by boat when they have traveled to countries like Costa Rica, Madagascar or Martinique, has occasionally become a film set. “There are always people who come to have photo shoots, catwalks for some fashion brands, presentations of films like 'Water for Elephants', Bunbury, George Michel or also to propose marriages,” says Niedziela, from the fifth generation of the circus. Her children London and Emilia constitute the sixth.
But also, not everything stays in 'props'. Her aerial performances stand out, among which Louisa's performance in a giant ball hanging from the ceiling stands out. Also striking is the 'Wheel of Death', where at a height of 10 meters a young man performs acrobatics above: “I can't even see it anymore,” says a nervous Emily. What happens inside the tent is a two-hour show designed more for young people and adults: “We have removed the figure of the traditional clown and now we have more actors or stand-up comedians,” explains Niedziela.
New audience in Murcia
The Raluy circus, despite having its origin in Catalonia, has visited other countries before Murcia. It is the first time they have spent a season performing in the capital of the Region and they do not know what they are going to find: “We are nervous and anxious because you never know how they will receive you,” explains Emily with uncertainty. They hope later to continue in the Community and for the circus to come to Cartagena.
And although preparing the stages and performances requires time and effort, the members of the circus take the opportunity to walk around and get to know the places they visit. Niedziela is interested in Murcian food: «I have a friend who gave me some strange names of things to eat. She thought it was a joke. “She told me 'marriages, bicycles and paparajotes',” she says, with some difficulty pronouncing the Murcian dessert with a lemon leaf.
Details in every corner
At the Raluy Legacy venue, everyone collaborates so that from the day of the premiere every corner is impeccable: «An hour before the show, people will still be putting things up. It is a world of magic and illusion,” says Niedziela. The circus wants visitors to travel to the past and for everything to go further: «Even going to the bathroom is an experience. We want it to be something that you cannot see anywhere else.
Unlike common circuses, Raluy Legacy is focused on a more adult audience, although they assure that a child will also like it: “Here we make any dream come true.” The family legacy has been transmitted from generation to generation and Emily points out that the circus has many shows left to perform: “We saw the work that our parents and grandparents did with so much love and passion, that it is transmitted. “We hope this family circus never dies.”
