The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine adopted a statement on the inadmissibility of holding referendums on the territory of the Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DNR and LNR), as well as in the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
“The Parliament adopted a statement on the inadmissibility of holding pseudo-referendums on the territory of Ukraine,” said MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
272 deputies voted for the adoption of the statement.
Earlier in the day, a member of the presidium of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Milorad Dodik, said that the issue of joining the regions is an autonomous decision both for them and for Russia. He noted that he understands the desire of the Russian population of Donbass to join the Russian Federation.
On September 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin addressed the Russians, residents of the republics of Donbass, Kherson and Zaporozhye regions and other liberated territories.
He noted that Russia cannot but respond to the sincere desire of the inhabitants of these regions to determine their lives. The President also assured that Russia would do everything to ensure safe conditions for referendums on joining the liberated territories into the Russian Federation.
On the same day, Vladimir Rogov, a member of the main council of the military-civilian administration (CAA) of the Zaporozhye region, said that the region was completely breaking off relations with Ukraine and the Ukrainian period in the history of the region was in the past. Rogov also said that the intensity of shelling of the Zaporozhye region by Ukrainian troops increased sharply after the decision to hold a referendum.
On the eve of the head of the State Administration of Zaporozhye Evgeny Balitsky signed a decree on holding a referendum on the entry of the region into Russia. Voting will take place from 23 to 27 September in the liberated territories of Zaporozhye.
Referendums on joining Russia in the same period will be held in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as in the Kherson region.
The overwhelming majority of residents of the DPR and LPR, as well as Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, support the holding of a referendum. According to the results of the RIPSI poll, in the DPR, 94% of the electorally active (ready to take part in the referendum) respondents were in favor of joining the republic to Russia. In the LPR, 93% of the polled citizens support this option, in the Zaporozhye region, 87% are ready to support it, and in the Kherson region, 80%.
On February 24, Russia launched a special operation to protect Donbass. The decision was made against the background of the aggravation of the situation in the region as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military.
