After a spat
Two police officers punched each other on the ninth floor of the Clinical Hospital of Uruguay, in Montevideo, while guarding a person in custody, El País said. An investigation with suspension from work was launched following the events, which were captured on security cameras. The incident took place last Saturday between 8 and 9 pm and occurred because one of the officials wanted to put handcuffs on the detainee’s feet and the other did not. After stepping out into the hallway to continue the argument, they both punched each other. As soon as the fight started, a nurse tried to separate them but she couldn’t. The situation worsened to the point that they had to call the police. Shortly thereafter, a superior went to the hospital and took away their service weapons and sent them away. More officials arrived at the scene to continue the stakeout. The director of the Clinical Hospital, Álvaro Villar, spoke to local media Subrayado and said that “a similar event had never happened before” and that “it is something completely out of the ordinary”. “In this hospital, there are policemen guarding people deprived of their liberty and there was an incident that had absolutely nothing to do with the hospital or the care. According to what the Interior Ministry has told us, they will be take steps to prevent this from happening again,” he concluded. The case was immediately entrusted to the legal department of the National Institute of Rehabilitation (INR).
