“In the last year things have happened that we did not think would happen after 45 years of democracy.” It was one of the messages launched this Sunday by Pedro Sanchez at the closing ceremony of the 41st Federal Congress of the PSOE held in Seville this weekend. The phrase symbolizes that socialists assume that the current political context, with them in the Government, is extraordinary and complex.
It is one of the main lines of the messages that have been transmitted these days in the Andalusian city. “Hard times”, as they recognize in Ferraz’s socialist leadership. The party has closed ranks around its leader and his team, which is practically the same as before the conclave with the armor of its main leaders such as María Jesús Montero and Santos Cerdán.
The judicial offensive, the attacks, the hoaxes, the misinformation. A “manhunt”as Cerdán defined it. All this is not going to bankrupt the socialists. In the face of all this, Sánchez was clear: resist with temperance and govern. “Progressive policies are how the extreme right and the right hostage to it are stopped,” he proclaimed.
Even more graphic: “At each attack, a progressive policy approved in the BOE.” The socialist leader took advantage of the expectation and the moment to make a new housing ada topic with which the socialists are risking much of their credit in the coming years.
Aldama, Juan Lobato, the brother of Sánchez and Miguel Ángel Gallardo, Begoña Gómez… The fronts that the Government has open are growing. And they are used every day by PP and Vox. “Let’s see what they come up with this Monday,” a socialist leader commented shortly before the end of the Federal Congress.
Due to all these factors, there are many socialist voices that define this Seville Congress as an act of collective resistance. “It’s what it has to do, the PSOE always does what it has to do,” a member of the Government and the leadership of the PSOE reflected on the matter on Saturday night.
Other sources highlight that in the face of attacks what has to be generated is “hope and future”, another of the axes that Sánchez wanted to convey in his speech. And not everyone shares the strategy of the messages that are launched either. The clearest case is that of Emiliano García-Pagepresident of Castilla-La Mancha, who left it recorded. Of course, he came away satisfied with the text of regional financing, which had caused so much commotion months ago.
“Not to the side or behind, but one step forward. I have more desire, more enthusiasm and more strength than ever.” Sánchez made an effort to convey that they are not going to break him. Gone is that unprecedented reflection of five days in April that left in shock to the party. There is no internal response to the leader, and it is something that the PSOE takes advantage of. The management bodies were approved with percentages of 90%. “A Congress being in the Government is not the same as being in the opposition,” recalls a leader.
On a purely informative level, there has been little news. The choice of the new Federal Executive it did not generate them. The context “for experiments” is not there. Sánchez has renewed confidence in his leaders and the adjustments have been minimal and especially aimed at territorial balances and with some warning to sailors.
The resurrection of the debate on women’s rights issues trans people It also attracted some attention to the chagrin of the socialist leadership and the sector most involved with the LGTBI community.
Next battle: 2027
The issue of territorial leadership is another of the topics that has most affected the congressional environment. And starting this Monday it will be in the foreground. He announced it publicly Oscar Lopezcalled to lead the turbulent Madrid socialist federation after the early and forced departure of Lobato.
Castilla y León will be another point of interest, with a Luis Tudanca willing to fight against a possible candidacy of Carlos Martínez, mayor of Soria. Aragón also anticipates a possible dispute between Pilar Alegría, if she finally makes the decision, and a continuing candidacy with Javier Lambán. Barring surprises, those will be the main points of interest from now on with the succession of regional congresses.
Sánchez focused much of his speech on the electoral processes for which the party is preparing. He defended the objective of having “more progressive governments” in 2027 in town councils and autonomous communities. “We will win the municipal and regional elections and the general elections again,” he said. “We are going to work hard to bring progressive change in 2027 where today there are denialist governments,” he said in reference to the consequences of DANA, very present throughout the weekend.
And Andalusia?
Because it is in Seville, because it is the main socialist federation and, barring advances, the place where the electoral event will arrive first (2026), the PSOE of Andalusia and Juan Espadas have had their leading role. The moment of truth starts this Monday.
The buzz about Espadas’ leadership has only grown this weekend. The most powerful leaders of the federation tried to maintain a low and cautious profilewith the idea that the Federal Congress would have its natural channel, although, as always in these events, and in a context of questioning by the general secretary, there were fires and water to put them out later.
A veteran Andalusian socialist, who has lived through a thousand and one wars, sums up in this way Public the situation: “I have felt that starting this Monday the party begins in Andalusia, which the alternative is going to take shape. I suppose there has been an agreement with Ferraz not to have done it before and not to cloud the congress by being the hosts. Swords comes out weaker than it came in.”
Sánchez limited himself to thanking Espadas for the “hospitality” as host of the Congress, but if the secretary general expected a ratification, a boost, even a sign of support, this did not occur at all. Silence, more like.
In addition to the debate on Espadas, the congress has left a photo that has not been given for a long time, due to the ERE case that blew up the party. The last former presidents of the Junta de Andalucía together, in the first row of guests, Susana Díaz, José Antonio Griñán and Manuel Chaves. With all normality.
“What happened to Chaves and Griñán is a timely and essential act of justice. We have to recover our legacy, a legacy that the right wants to erase from history,” this leader summarizes the situation.
