The Attorney General’s Office reports another 83 arrest warrants against police and military personnel, as well as members of the Guerreros Unidos armed group, for their alleged involvement in the case
Eight years after the disappearance of 43 students in Mexico was reported, the case is once again gaining importance after the latest actions by the authorities, who yesterday arrested Jesús Murillo Karam, the prosecutor who was in charge of the investigation at the time. The arrest took place a day after the president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, called for “truth” and punishment of those responsible after the publication of the report of a government commission that calls the operation a “state crime.”
According to the document, the military and officials allowed, due to their “actions, omissions or participation,” the kidnapping and death of the students of the Ayotzinapa school. “Disclosing this atrocious, inhumane situation, and at the same time punishing those responsible, helps prevent repetition. May these unfortunate events never occur again, “said López Obrador.
Murillo assured in 2015 that the “historical truth” was that the young people were murdered, “burned and their ashes thrown into the San Juan River”, by order of former local authorities. The Attorney General’s Office also reported another 83 arrest warrants against police and military personnel, as well as members of the Guerreros Unidos armed group, for their alleged involvement in the Ayotzinapa case, for “organized crime, forced disappearance, torture, homicide, and crimes against the administration.” of justice”, according to the Aztec newspaper ‘Milenio’.
“An important step”
The lawyer for the relatives of the 43 students, Vidulfo Rosales, applauded the performance. The arrest of Murillo, who did not resist and will remain imprisoned in a prison in the capital, is “an important step,” said the lawyer, although he regretted that “what he is going to do is defend himself, I do not think he wants to provide any information ». The Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), which governed Mexico for 71 uninterrupted years until December 2000, assured that Murillo’s arrest “responds more to a political issue than to justice.”
The attack against the 43 young people on the night of September 26-27, 2014 has symbolized for years the impunity of the armed groups and their collusion with Mexican public institutions. The Government, which ensures that the case “is not closed”, acknowledges that “there is no indication” that the students are still alive eight years after their disappearance.
