horror movies it seems to have become a broken photocopier in which, with each rework, we have a film more defective than the previous one, barring cases of exceptional creativity. In this bleak panorama for the genre, it is worth seeing the originals that made history based on scares and that are still unbeaten, such as, “The Prophecy” by Richard Donner.
There’s a reason exorcisms and psycho killers have been blasted to death with decadent simplism, while this classic has held its own for its dark story about the arrival of the antichrist. The few shadows were doomed to remain in its shadow, including four sequels, a remake, and a series destined for cancellation.
It all starts when Kathy Thorn gives birth to a stillborn baby. Her husband, Robert, hides the truth from her and replaces her son with an orphaned boy, ignoring her diabolic origin. Misfortunes do not take long to accumulate as the protagonists are forced to accept that hell exists and that they have front row seats to see how it is unleashed on Earth.
There are no monsters or gore, just intrigue and lurid situations boldly directed by the late Richard Donner. The shocking hymn to evil “Ave satani” also ends up giving the atmosphere perversity. It may be easier to admire than to watch with the lights off at this point, but it’s still an exemplary horror movie that’s well worth a visit, and what better time than on the eve of Halloween.
