The priest Mariano Caballero García will be the town crier of the patron saint festivities in honor of San Bartolomé, which will be held in Cieza from August 23 to 31. The proclamation will take place on August 15 in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Assumption.
Caballero was born in 1940 into a religious family. His vocation is given to him by Catholic Action. He studied at the minor seminary of Murcia, where he studied Humanities, three years of Philosophy and four years of Theology to finally be ordained a priest on June 29, 1967.
His first destination was the parish of Santa María Magdalena de Cehegín. Later, he spent six years in Bolivia, where, according to his own account, he began to “understand the gospel.” Caballero has also been characterized by his “interest and love” for his native Cieza and especially for the Ermita del Santo Cristo del Consuelo, where he worked for ten years until he retired. He currently chairs the Piedras Vivas Association and his soup kitchen, in which he distributes food to people and families who lack resources or are in a precarious situation. He is also involved in the Contigo Project.
