The price of electricity in the wholesale market climbs again to 186.4 euros per megawatt hour (MWh) after the weekend break. After this Sunday the cost of electricity fell to 111.60 euros per MWh, the lowest until August 29, this Monday it will return to the levels of last week, when it even exceeded the average of 200 euros per MWh. According to the data of the designated electricity market operator (OMIE), the most expensive time slot will be between 9:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m., when the rate will reach 249 euros per MWh, while the cheapest will be between 2.00 and 3.00, when it will be 141.46 euros per MWh.
The price of Sunday, then, seems like a pause in the continuous escalation that the wholesale market has been experiencing. Faced with this situation, the Government has already launched a public consultation to carry out a reform of the regulated tariff (also known as PVPC), which has 10.7 million users. The vertiginous rise in light, in addition, will be the subject of debate this week in all the institutions of the European Union: there will be debate in the plenary session of the European Parliament, the European Commission will draw up a proposal to alleviate the rise and the finance ministers will address it at their meetings on Monday and Tuesday in Luxembourg.
The climb has a lot to do with the price of gas, which is triggered by high demand around the world, especially Asia. The futures of the Iberian gas market suggest that it will be close to 100 euros per MWh in October and November. Everything indicates that the daily price of electricity will remain at high levels and on the rise until, at least, March of next year, when with the arrival of spring natural gas should start a downward path and the pressure on the receipt should go down.
