The President of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, suspended his trip to the United States to participate in the IX Summit of the Americaswhich is celebrated from this Monday in Los Angeles (California).

Lacalle Pou had planned to leave this Tuesday for US soil at around 11:30 local time together with his foreign minister, Francisco Bustillo.
“Due to tomorrow’s trip to the Summit of the Americas in the US, I had a PCR done today. The result of it gave that I am positive for covid-19. As a result of this situation, I must cancel all activities for the next few days,” the Uruguayan president wrote on Monday on his official Twitter account, explaining the reason for his absence.

Absenteeism: protagonist of the Summit
The one from Uruguay, for health reasons, joins other absences after the United States confirmed to Efe on Monday that it did not invite Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela due to the situation of democracy and human rights in those three nations.
Also, the presidents of Mexico, Andrés López Obrador, and Guatemala, Alejandro Giammattei, confirmed that they will not attend: the first due to the absence of the previously mentioned countries and the second, according to his cabinet, due to agenda issues.

The president of Uruguay planned to take advantage of the visit to the United States to meet with the president of the United States, Joe Biden, a meeting whose previous efforts were recognized by both Administrations, but of which no confirmation had emerged. This was Lacalle Pou’s second trip to the United States since he took officeon March 1, 2020, for the period 2020-2025.
The Uruguayan president visited the United States during the 76th General Assembly of the United Nations, in New York, on September 22, a few days after participating in Mexico in the VI Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American States and Caribbean (Celac).
