The Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium, from Atlético de Madrid, will house the 2027 Champions League final, as the president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Rafael Louzán, during his visit to the expansion works of the La Cartuja de Sevilla stadium, stage of the final of the Copa del Rey on April 26.
The top leader of the RFEF affirmed, in statements to journalists, that Spain, in addition to hosting this year the final of the European League in the New San Mamés de Bilbao, has “guaranteed the final of the ‘Champions’ of 2027 in the Metropolitan”, which competed for it with the candidacy of Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan.
In this way, the Metropolitan will host its second final of the maximum European competition, after it was the headquarters of the 2019 final that played the Tottenham and the Liverpool resulting from 0-2 in favor of Liverpool and goals of Mohamed Salah, in minute 2 of penalty, and of Divock Origi, in the 87th minute.
Cartuja expansion
“And why not ask for,” he said, “with the support of the Spanish Federation, that Seville can host any of the next European finals. We will raise (before UEFA) that possibility of being able to house some, because we have the enclosure, the city and a fantastic hotel infrastructure for an event of those characteristics,” Louzán said.
The president of the Spanish Federation, however, did not specify the date or competition by not being defined yet for that hypothetical candidacy, nor did he offer more details about his announcement that Spain has “guaranteed” the final of the Champions League of within two seasons, the 2026-27.
Louzán, together with the Minister of Culture and Sports of the Junta de Andalucía, Patricia del Pozo, visited on Wednesday the expansion works of the La Cartuja stadium, which the Heliopol construction company executes and will increase its capacity from the nearly 60,000 current seats to 72,000, which will be the third of Spain on capacity behind the Camp Nou and Santiago Bernabéu.
In these actions, that both responsible assured that they will be completely finished for the final Copera on April 26, 500 workers “in two shifts”, the counselor said, and have led to an investment of 15 million euros.
