The president of Telefónica, José María Álvarez-Pallete, and the president of Naturgy, Francisco Reynés, have shared their perspectives on the impact of artificial intelligence on society and the business world within the annual CEDE Congress.
Both agree that AI is not just a new technology, but a paradigm shift that requires deep adaptation and responsibility.
Álvarez-Pallete highlights that AI is having an impact 70 times greater than the Industrial Revolution, and that its adoption is much faster: compared to the years it took to install the first 50 million phones, the adoption of ChatGPT barely took a month.
“For me, regulation is like therapy. I need to talk about it. In my sector, regulation, for example, is from the last century. We are regulating for horse-drawn carriages in the world of highways. Therefore, I am no longer asking for adjust the regulation is that I think they have to deregulate us. I don’t compete only with the usual ones. I compete with new people who are not regulated and the only thing we are doing is that we are not allowed to compete. but that opportunity lies in designing a industrial policy that promotes innovation. This industrial revolution is not the one from 25 years ago. It is new and it is much more powerful. Those who won 25 years ago are not guaranteed to win in this one,” said Álvarez Pallete.
As the president of Telefónica explained, “there is no European company among the 20 most innovative in the world and not because there is no innovation.
For him, the key for companies, especially SMEs, is training. “Let’s not stop thinking that training is done by others,” he says, “training has to be part of the programs of large, medium and small companies.”
