The president of Romania, the centrist Klaus Iohannishas resigned from his position on Monday, ahead of a dismissal plan presented by the opposition parties of the extreme right. Iohannis has announced that it presented its resignation to save the country the crisis that could be triggered … In the event that Parliament voted, as expected, in favor of its dismissal.
«To avoid this crisis to Romania and its citizens, I resign from the position of President of Romania. I will leave the last morning, February 12, ”said the president in a statement.
Iohannis, whose second and final mandate officially ended on December 21, was required by the Constitutional Court of Romania to remain in office until a successor is elected, after the Court itself annulled the presidential elections for suspicions of Russian interference In the electoral campaign.
The president’s announcement coincides with the approval of a third request to discuss in Parliament the decision to dismiss it. The attempts of the opposition parties to take the issue to Parliament were rejected twice for procedural reasons. However, on Monday several nationalist and Eurosptic parties managed to gather the necessary signatures to initiate the process.
Iohannis’s mandate extended after last year’s presidential elections were annulled by decision of the Constitutional Court (CCR). Although Iohannis argued that the extension was constitutional and said it would leave office once a new president took possession, the opposition has constantly questioned his legitimacy.
The new presidential elections are scheduled for May 4, for the first round. Meanwhile, it is expected that the position of President of the Republic and the strategic National Defense Council is occupied by the President of Parliament.
