Monday 25 October was a special day in many ways in the career of Nico Hulkenberg. The German veteran, who has played nine Formula 1 seasons plus a tenth – in 2020 – as a ‘luxury replacement’ in his career, has in fact experienced for the first time in his sporting parable the sensations given by an IndyCar single-seater. It is not the first time that the Emmerich native, currently the third driver for the Aston Martin team, has allowed himself to be seduced by categories other than F1. His ‘escape’ in the WEC was famous in 2015, when he competed at the wheel of the Porsche in the six hours of Spa and above all the 24 hours of Le Mans, triumphing in this last race as a crew with Earl Bamber and Nick Tandy.
Hulkenberg tested the Dallara used by the pilots of the American series on the circuit of Barber Motorsports, in Alabama. The former driver of Force India and Renault rode with the McLaren Arrow team, which would be interested in deploying three single-seaters on the track in the 2022 season and would be concretely thinking of joining the German to the young duo Rosenqvist-O’Ward. Waiting to understand if the negotiations will actually be successful, here are some shots of the debut of ‘Hulk’ at the wheel of an IndyCar car.
