Militants who want to challenge López Miras for the leadership of the party have until June 22 to present their alternative.
If Patricia Fernández or any other PP militant in the region aspires to lead the organization in the next extraordinary congress on July 15, she has until next Wednesday, June 22, to formalize her candidacy. And she will only need 90 endorsements from affiliates who are up to date with the payment of dues and have been a member for at least one year.
The president of the Organizing Committee, Joaquín Segado, yesterday offered the details of the XVIII Congress at a press conference offered at the regional headquarters of the PP, one day after the conclave was officially convened by the Regional Board of Directors. Mowing revealed that the event will be held in the city of Murcia, in a space yet to be defined. It must be in a large space to house the 1,005 delegates who will have a voice and a vote in the congress, of which 205 are ex officio for belonging to the party’s governing bodies and another 800 will be elected by the affiliates at the polls.
These votes will be held on Monday, July 4 at the various PP headquarters in the region. There will also be a ballot box to elect the next president of the party. People will vote even if there is only one candidacy, that of Fernando López Miras, who on Thursday confirmed that he will stand for re-election. The same was done with Feijóo in the national congress, which was put to the vote despite not having an opponent.
As the congress is extraordinary, there will be no discussion of papers. The program of the conclave will consist of the management report of the general secretary of the PP of the Region, José Miguel Luengo; and the president of the manager of New Generations, Antonio Landáburu, and Joaquín Segado himself will also intervene, this time for his status as spokesman for the Popular Parliamentary Group in the Regional Assembly. Then the voting of the candidacies to the Executive Committee that are finally presented and the speech of the elected president (or president) would take place.
Joaquín Segado indicated that the intention of the Organizing Committee is that it be “a transparent congress, where the maxim of ‘one militant, one vote’ will prevail, and which will serve to highlight the unity and strength of the organization.” He avoided giving a figure for the number of militants who will have the right to vote, since members have been given time to catch up on the payment of dues.
In the conclave, all affiliates up to date with their dues may vote, provided that they were militants before the convening of the congress. That is, last Wednesday. Precisely the Board of Directors, at the meeting where it kicked off the congressional process, approved 90 registrations of new members, as well as 20 cancellations.
“This regional congress will lay the foundations to build a better future for the Region of Murcia and for all of us who live in it,” said the president of the organizing committee, who recalled that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the Statute of Autonomy. Four decades “in which we have been able to transform the Region and turn it into a more prosperous, modern, sustainable land, and where more employment has been generated.” “25 years ago we were at the bottom of Spain and now we are one of the autonomous communities that is growing the most and with a project led by the Popular Party”, remarked Joaquín Segado.
Despite the fact that, being an extraordinary congress, there will be no ideological presentations, Mowed remarked that “what is important are the ideas of the project of the Popular Party in the Region of Murcia and that is what unites us all to win the next elections and continue building a better society.
Tellado: “This is a presidential party where there is no room for bicephalies”
Only two voices were heard at the meeting of the Board of Directors of the PP of the Region, the highest body between congresses. That of Fernando López Miras and that of Miguel Tellado, Deputy Secretary of Organization of the national PP and a man of the absolute confidence of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, both Galician.
Tellado was already forceful in the press conference prior to the Board when demanding unity in the PP of the Region. But more he was inside, behind closed doors, according to witnesses. Although he did not mention at any time the mayor of Archena, Patricia Fernández, the deputy secretary of Organization reproached those who “promote us to be the front page of the newspapers for internal reasons.”
But the most direct allusion to Patricia Fernández –absent on the Board of Directors– by Feijóo’s ‘plumber’ was when he warned that “you cannot go around criticizing our own government in interviews.” The interview that the mayor of Archena gave to Cadena Cope came to everyone’s mind, in which she acknowledged that she did not like the current composition of the regional Executive, which after the motion of censure has directors expelled from Cs and of Vox, respectively.
“This is a presidential party where there is no room for two-headed people,” the national organic official concluded his speech. Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s team has been advocating since entering Genoa that regional presidents should also be party leaders in their respective territories. It is the doctrine that was applied with Isabel Díaz Ayuso in Madrid.
Miguel Tellado’s speech was so clear that there was not a single intervention during the question and answer period.
