The project contemplates connecting Ronda Oeste with the Víctor Villegas auditorium and the Plaza Circular with Ronda de Levante
The Popular Party of the municipality of Murcia presented this Tuesday its ‘Comprehensive Mobility Plan for Murcia’, the fifth of the strategic projects that the Popular Municipal Group is proposing monthly until 2023.
The proposal has five axes that are based on the creation of new pedestrian areas with the creation of underground tunnels; collective public transportation; personal mobility; traffic management and construction of more dissuasive car parks and the mobility ordinance. Specifically, the PP proposes the execution of two large underground tunnels to, as reported in a statement, “eliminate traffic jams, provide more fluidity to traffic and gain more space for pedestrians.”
The most important of these tunnels would run from Pintor Sobejano, passing through the Plano de San Francisco, to Intendente Jorge Palacios, joining the Ronda Oeste with the Víctor Villegas auditorium and opening the city to the river. The second of them will cross the Plaza Circular transversely, linking Primo de Rivera with Ronda de Levante.
«The objective is to turn Murcia into a friendly city, in which the pedestrian is the center and in which the people of the metropolitan area can connect effectively and sustainably. Advances in this transport model will condition the future of Murcians, their way of relating, and their quality of life for decades”, explained José Ballesta.
For her part, Rebeca Pérez criticized that “the socialists have proposed the massive passage of buses through the city, eliminating the possibility of creating infrastructures so that the tram and the tram can be integrated, as proposed by the Popular Party.”
8,000 new public parking spaces
The proposal by José Ballesta’s team includes the creation of 8,000 new reduced-rate municipal parking spaces, which will mean “increasing the current car park network by 50%, with 16,000 spaces.” Of these new places, 6,000 would be located in the city center and 2,000 in the rest of the municipality.
These would be reduced-rate car parks (with a parking fee of 3 euros per day), located in strategic places at the entrance to the city. These sites would simultaneously be intermodal stations, since they would be connected to the structuring means of transport (tram, BTR, Supra, buses, minibuses and proximity means).
Comprehensive public system for renting bikes, motorcycles and scooters
Another of the actions proposed by the PP is the implementation of a public rental system for electric bikes, motorcycles and scooters. The proposal implies making available to Murcians a fleet of 1,800 ecological vehicles with the following distribution: 800 scooters, 650 bicycles and 350 motorcycles, all electric. As they point out in the statement, the number of vehicles could be expanded and adapted in real time to the existing demand at any given time. This approach is articulated with 276 rental stations distributed between the urban area and the districts.
To facilitate the use and effectiveness of this service, the PP proposes the creation of an application in which residents, visitors or tourists can download the ticket online to move on any means of public transport in the municipality, which would have a fee unified and will allow citizens to use it more efficiently and conveniently.
A green pedestrian promenade at the entrance to Murcia through El Carmen
The Ballesta team also proposes the ‘Between Stations’ plan to value the connection axis that runs from the south station, the new AVE del Carmen station, to the north station, the old Zaraiche station, connecting and uniting the city of Murcia comprehensively.
«The Carmen station is going to become the entrance to Murcia with the arrival of the underground AVE. This is going to be the letter of introduction of our city to tourists and visitors who come to discover Murcia, so the remodeling of the surroundings of the station is necessary”, spokeswoman Rebeca Pérez explained.
The connection between the Zaraiche station and the Carmen station contemplates the incorporation of a platform reserved for electric transport, which could make the tram and the tram or any other high-performance ecological transport (BRT) compatible.
In addition, this project also contemplates the new pedestrian areas, since it proposes the union of the Viudes park with the entire area of the Artillery Barracks and Murcia River, creating a large green walk to the north of the city, crossing the historic center of Murcia .
The development of this new transport model would also be accompanied, according to the PP, by an Improvement Plan for the main access roads to Murcia: the El Palmar, Alcantarilla and Alicante highways; with the consequent improvement of roads, sidewalks, revegetation and bike lanes.
