Two weeks after DANA tragedy The first parliamentary control session of the Government has been held. It was this Tuesday in the Senate. There was some expectation about it. On top of the table, several questions from the PP about the management of the crisis and the role of the Executive of Pedro Sanchez.
The socialists have consciously decided not to enter into confrontation with the popular ones. Despite the “provocations” and accusations that are poured out day after day from the party he leads Alberto Núñez Feijóo. “We are not going to get into their strategy,” sources from Moncloa told this medium before beginning the plenary session.
The internal slogan in the Government is not to enter into the trap of the popular ones, as confirmed by several socialist sources. Sánchez himself demonstrated it on Tuesday in his appearance from La Moncloa. That does not mean that, as this media reported last weekend, the role played by the Executive is defended and some criticism of Carlos Mazón. Especially through Diana Morantleader of the PSPV and not directly.
The PSOE, as a party, has also been very cautious to date. Practically silent. It has only been broken by criticism of the PP for not condemning the demonstrations ultras and fascists around Ferraz. Some socialist voices oppose this “correct attitude” despite the harsh words that, for example, Feijóo used against the Government this Tuesday.
The control session in the Senate had a common denominator. All the socialist ministers (also some from other groups) who participated began their speech in the same way: showing their solidarity with the victims of DANA in País Valencià, Castilla-La Mancha and Andalusia.
From the first minutes it was clear the attitude that the PSOE ministers were going to maintain. Fernando Grande-MarlaskaMinister of the Interior, defended that Spain is an autonomous State with “a consensual and strong Civil Protection system.” “In this framework, the Government has done what it has to do, stand by the Valencian Generalitat and provide all the necessary help. We will continue doing it and we will not leave there until there is a true recovery.”
The senator of Commitments Enric Morera focused the focus on Mazón. And he carried out a very tough intervention. “You should be before a judicial authority and require your cell phone so that you do not destroy evidence,” he told Marlaska. “A reckless homicide has occurred, resulting in preventable deaths,” he added. The Valencian parliamentarian confirmed that they would file a complaint against the president of the Generalitat. At the same time, Compromís regretted that the Sánchez Government did not take control of the situation due to the “incompetence” of the PP.
Especially significant has been the intervention of Pilar AlegríaGovernment spokesperson and Minister of Education and Sports. “Where we have to be is what is important, providing certainty in these moments of difficulty. The facts and the chronology are clear. Time will have to know the responsibilities. But today we are dealing with what is important. You are wrong if you think that we are going to enter into confrontation , because it would be a lack of respect for the Valencian population. Nothing other than words of encouragement and respect will come out of my mouth,” he told a popular senator.
“I regret your tone, I regret your question. You will not find in me someone to confront. Your tone has not been what Valencians expect from us today,” said the Minister of the Presidency, Felix Bolaños. The question from the popular senator Alicia García spoke of “Government on the run” and intended to criticize Sánchez saying that he was fine after suffering a physical attack in Paiporta. “You do yours and the Government does its thing, which is to govern,” he also responded to another PP senator.
The Ribera exception
As was seen last week, one of the few communicative exceptions in this strategy is the defense of Teresa Riberathird vice president and minister of Ecological Transition. The PP has been charging against its role for days and maneuvering against her election as European Commissioner. Ribera herself came out on Friday to respond to the accusations and revealed that she tried to speak, unsuccessfully, with Mazón up to four times on DANA day.
The maneuvers and criticisms of the popular people against Ribera in Brussels were directly replicated by the socialists. Specifically, the Minister of Foreign Affairs was very graphic, Jose Manuel Albares“It is irresponsible, a lack of loyalty and a lack of patriotism. Right now what Spain and Europe need is unity and we need a commission,” he told the media in the corridors of the Senate.
The Minister of Transportation also momentarily skipped the script Oscar Puente. After the Crisis Committee, he was in charge of attending to the media in Moncloa to report on the actions of his competence in the Valencian Country. “It takes a lot of pettiness to think that a government does not devote itself to a territory, depending on who governs it, honestly, it does not fit my mind,” he said in reference to the criticism expressed by Feijóo in an interview in Antenna 3.
In the same press conference, yes, Puente used the same slogan given by the Government in relation to Mazón’s role and his possible resignation. “This is not the time for responsibilities. It is time to work to move the province of Valencia forward, the rest will come.”
This Wednesday the activity resumes in Congress. First, with an appearance by the Minister of Territorial Policy Angel Victor Torres on crisis management. Then there will be the usual control session with the Government with several questions on this topic. Except for an unexpected twist in the script, the slogan will continue to remain the same in Moncloa for the moment.
