Civilians of Kakhovka returned to the city after the retreat of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). This was reported by Izvestia correspondent Mary Badunts on Thursday, March 17.
“Kherson region is under the control of the Russian armed forces.<...> The weather is quite warm, people are walking, talking. Cars drive, shops and pharmacies work,” she said.
Badunts noted that a Ukrainian flag hangs next to the local art school, which no one is going to take down.
The day before, the Russian Guard successfully repelled an attack by Ukrainian neo-Nazis on the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station (HPP).
The Russian National Guard took control of the hydroelectric power plant on the first day of a special operation to protect the residents of Donbass on February 24. During all this time, she did not stop functioning.
On March 16, Mary Badunts spoke about the work of the Kakhovskaya HPP. According to her, work at the station is supported by a duty group of four people. At the same time, 250 thousand people usually work at the station. The journalist clarified that the employees of the Russian Guard do not interfere in the work of the station.
From the station begins the North Crimean Canal, which was blocked in 2014. In the first hours of the special military operation in Ukraine, the hydraulic structures of Kakhovka were unblocked. Dnieper water filled the canal.
In mid-February, due to the aggravation of the situation in the Donbass as a result of shelling by the Ukrainian military, the DPR and LPR announced the evacuation of the civilian population to the Russian Federation and asked for recognition of independence.
On February 21, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a corresponding decree. On February 24, a special operation was launched to protect the civilian population of Donbass. As the press secretary of the head of state Dmitry Peskov clarified, the special operation has two goals – the demilitarization and denazification of Ukraine. According to him, both of these aspects pose a threat to the Russian state and people.
