The warning during the creation of twenty new cardinals
VATICAN CITY. The “short-sightedness” of men does not lead to suffering the tragedies of the “cold war”. Even during yesterday’s Consistory in St. Peter’s Basilica, while creating twenty new cardinals identified from every corner of the planet, Pope Francis returned to launch an appeal for peace in this difficult moment that is marking the world, starting with the war between Russia and Ukraine. The Pontiff warned those in charge of nations by citing in his homily Cardinal Agostino Casaroli, who was Vatican Secretary of State from 1979 to 1990, defined by Bergoglio “rightly famous for his open gaze to support, with wise and patient dialogue, the new horizons of Europe after the cold war ». And now “God forbid that human myopia – Francis admonishes – closes again those horizons that he has opened”.
The rite of the Consistory, which provides for the imposition of the purple cap – the color of the blood of martyrdom – the oath of the cardinals, the delegations that accompany them, is the act with which the Pope designs the Church of the future, through the conclave who will elect his successor. Today most of the electors are nominated by the Argentine Pontiff: 83 out of 132.
Cardinal Angelo Becciu also took part in the ceremony yesterday, on trial in the Vatican for managing the funds of the Secretariat of State.
The Bishop of Rome reminded the new cardinals that “a Cardinal loves the Church both in dealing with big questions and in dealing with small ones; both by meeting the great of this world – he must do so many times – and the little ones, who are great before God ».
After the celebration, Francis and the new cardinals went to visit Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI.
